First Nations Council
The First Nations Council was established in May 2026 to help shape the Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support to become a more accountable, culturally responsive, effective, and safe place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Council members
The First Nations Council is in the process of appointing members and will be made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff from across the department.
Council members are strong advocates and leaders within the department and their local communities.
How the council will make an impact
The First Nations Council will ensure cultural considerations guide how services are delivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Queensland.
Representatives will sit on the Executive Board of Management to elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices to ensure culturally informed perspectives are considered in the decision-making process.
Future goals
The First Nations Council strives to provide strong cultural leadership that will positively impact services for Queenslanders.
